Openness to innovation and thoughtful shopping – Santander examines eCommerce Polish consumers behavior

Santander Bank Polska has once again explored the habits of Polish eCommerce consumers. This year’s report, titled "E-commerce Experiences" (originally: “Doświadczenia e-commerce”) provides intriguing insights into the shopping behaviors of Poles. So, what does it reveal?

Online shopping is a trend embraced by all generations, with nearly half of the respondents (48%) placing orders at least once a month. A shared characteristic across age groups is an increasing awareness of shopping choices and the pursuit of the best deals. Over a third of those surveyed combine online and offline shopping to find the most attractive promotions, and many also visit physical stores to view products before making purchases online.

The report also highlights that Polish eCommerce consumers are eager to adopt innovative technologies, such as:

  • searching for products using images – a feature used by 40% of respondents.
  • virtual fitting rooms – less common but already tried by one in ten Poles.

Parcel lockers remain a cornerstone of Polish eCommerce. Interestingly, they are increasingly used as return points, with 56% of respondents, mainly younger users, opting for this solution. Meanwhile, older generations prefer returning items to physical stores or collection points.

The findings show that Polish eCommerce consumers are not only open to innovations but are also becoming more conscious in their shopping habits, combining the convenience of technology with a focus on budget management.

A bank with its own marketplace?

An app that not only manages your finances but also allows you to shop? This is the new vision of mBank, which is introducing its own marketplace platform – mOkazje. Developed in collaboration with the e-store Morele, which supplies the products, the service is set to launch for mBank app users in December 2024. But what inspired this idea?

The decision to implement the platform was backed by research showing that in 2024, mBank customers spent approximately 32 billion PLN online. This means nearly one in four zlotys spent in Polish eCommerce came from mBank users.

What can shoppers expect from mOkazje? Initially, users will have access to around 1.5 million products from 400 suppliers. A key feature of the platform will be its strict quality verification process for sellers, ensuring high standards of service and customer satisfaction.

Shopping through mOkazje will function similarly to other popular marketplace platforms, but its standout feature will be simplified payments. By integrating the entire process directly into the banking app, users will avoid redirections to external payment operators. They’ll simply select their payment method – from their account or card – and confirm the transaction using a PIN code or FaceID. mBank also plans to introduce its own deferred payment option in the future.

Additionally, mBank is offering users the option to upgrade their accounts with a Pro package for 48.60 PLN per year. This subscription includes free delivery for orders over 39 PLN, making it an attractive proposition for active platform users.

Before the platform’s launch, mBank conducted tests with 500,000 of its users, who had access to a pilot version of the service. Between June and the end of the testing period, customers purchased 11,000 products. The results confirmed the platform’s potential, with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of an impressive 92 out of 100. This indicates that mOkazje could become a permanent and highly valued addition to mBank’s services.

Cyber Monday shopping outpaces Black Friday

Which day sees the highest online sales? Until recently, it was Black Friday, the last Friday of November. However, in 2024, Cyber Monday—the Monday following Black Friday - proved to be the most profitable day. In the United States, online sales on Cyber Monday reached a record-breaking $13.3 billion, marking a 7.3% increase compared to the previous year (according to Adobe Analytics).

A significant driver of this surge was the popularity of mobile shopping, which generated $7.6 billion in sales (compared to approximately $10 billion on Black Friday), representing a 13.3% year-over-year increase. Deferred payment options were also widely embraced, accounting for nearly $1 billion in transactions, with 75% of these made via mobile devices.

The peak shopping activity occurred between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM, when consumers were spending an average of $15.8 million per minute! This demonstrates that shoppers are no longer limiting themselves to a single day of promotions, instead extending the "shopping frenzy" across the entire weekend, from Black Friday through Cyber Monday.
