Is circular logistics the future? Cooperation between InPost and RE-ZIP

The growing importance of e-commerce brings many benefits, but it also places an additional burden on the environment. Cardboard boxes, single-use packaging and the transportation of shipments emit pollution. For this reason, the concept of sustainable eCommerce is gaining popularity, and more and more green solutions are appearing on the market.

EkoBox is a new idea that was developed in cooperation between parcel operator InPost and RE-ZIP. What distinguishes it? It is the first circular packaging circulation system for online stores in Poland. The packaging is designed in such a way that it can be used multiple times - up to 6 times. After receiving an order, the customer sends back a specially designed envelope, which is cleaned and used once again. This reduces carbon emissions by up to 80% (compared to using disposable packaging). Users also contribute to a 10-fold reduction in waste.

The business model proposed by RE-ZIP is distinguished by one more feature. Upon receiving an order in eco-friendly packaging, customers receive a discount code that they can use for their next purchases.

RE-ZIP is a popular solution in Denmark, Austria and the UK. Will it achieve success in Poland as well? You can read more about the solution here.

Premiere of the report "E-commerce in Poland"

Gemius annually conducts a comprehensive study of the eCommerce market in Poland. The "E-commerce in Poland 2023" report is the 11th edition of the publication. What can we learn about the condition of e-commerce this year?

The shopping motivations of e-consumers have not changed significantly compared to 2022. With inflation remaining high, shoppers still pay a lot of attention to financial issues. They are most often encouraged to buy online by: lower prices than in traditional stores (53%), lower delivery costs (53%) and the availability of discount codes (44%).

What else stands out in the Polish eCommerce industry?

  • In 2023, interest in social media shopping has increased significantly. Almost ⅕ of Internet users declared that they buy via social media. However, it is still a form of ordering that gives users less satisfaction than shopping on sales platforms.
  • Users of sales platforms are also increasingly willing to buy abroad. Already 30% of Internet users use foreign e-commerce sites.
  • Intrusive ads (30%), long waits for delivery (30%) and high shipping costs (27%) were identified as the most common problems encountered.
  • Non-buyers online (of which there are still 21%) are most likely to abandon this form of shopping due to a desire to see the product and concerns about payment security.

The Gemius study is almost 300 pages of valuable knowledge about the condition of Polish eCommerce, customer behavior and current trends. The report is available at this link.

First social media, then online shopping

98% of shoppers in Europe have changed the way they shop online. According to "The European Ecommerce Report 2023," online shoppers first look for information about products on social media, and only then decide to buy them. For this purpose, they are most likely to use platforms such as:

  • YouTube - 47%,
  • Facebook - 43%,
  • Instagram - 40%.

The change in consumer habits shows the real power of social proof - users trust opinions, tests and product reviews prepared by other consumers.

Moreover, the report also outlines other changes that have taken place in the eCommerce industry in recent months. Consumers are increasingly savvy in their search for low-priced products, which is linked to the fact that more than half of them are not satisfied with the state of the economy in their own country.

The publication's findings are a reminder of how quickly the reality of e-commerce is evolving. Recognizing and adapting your business to these changes is essential to staying afloat, especially at a time when inflation, rising costs of living and even global unrest are having an impact on commerce.
